Love, peace, where are you these days?

Love, peace, where are you these days? Why are you so rare in our lives? I miss the days you were a regular visitor in our homes, our relationships, marriages, communities, nations.

You used to make us laugh freely, and helped us talk to one another for hours. You used to make us assist one another, with kindness in our hearts and hands.

But since you left, hatred and strife replaced you. Silence became the norm, and unhappiness never left us.

Conflicts and strife reigned, while you remained elusive, hiding in the shadows, and leaving us desperate for your return.

Oh, love, peace, we long for your presence, to fill our lives with joy and warmth; to mend our broken bonds, and heal the wounds of our hearts.

Come back to us, oh love, peace! In your purest form, so we may laugh and talk again, and assist one another with open hearts.

Let us rediscover you, the beauty that lies within your embrace; that brings peace and understanding, and banish hatred from our midst.

Love, peace, come back, and let your light shine on us once more.

7 Years Later: Was my Volunteering work with VSO Worth?

When I resigned from my job at the National Council of Churches of  Kenya (NCCK) in 2005 to pursue international volunteering with the Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) in the Philippines, many of my friends thought I had made a terrible mistake.  I was a young professional with a promising career in peacebuilding and many doubted my decision to volunteer overseas in unpaid work.  I wanted to become a volunteer with VSO because I thought this would provide me with the ideal opportunity to work in international development where I would gain valuable   I at Tagbilaran port, Bohol, on a job assignment to Siliman University, Dumaguete  work experience that would increase my prospects for a getting better when I return back to Kenya. Through troubled waters, I sail my boat, Wild winds of the south, they fiercely float. Tears fill my eyes, as I struggle to cope, Ties that bind my family, slowly elope. The constant conflicts, the endless fights, Tired and weary, I face sleepless nights. Judged and misunderstood, I bear the weight, Demands, demands, they never abate.
